Maximillian was born with a
contrary streak and a tendency, as a kid, to nix every suggestion anyone
ever made to him. It was annoying to the point that his father started
calling him "Nax", which to him sounded like a variation on "no" that
carried the sting of denying his difficult son the name of the family
patriarch. He would not become Maximillian, nor even Max, but rather
would be subjugated to the dark realms of "Nax", the recalcitrant.
Names mean a lot in a person's life, and Nax
would embrace his, like a kidnap victim grown dependent upon his captor.
His is a self-penalizing purgatory of self-negation that he cannot fully
understand himself. But then one day something happens in his life that
causes things to change in ways determined by internal forces too big
for him to understand or even control.
